John J. McMahon Jr. Memorial Roller Hockey Club
7th Annual Summer Roller Hockey Camp
The John J. McMahon Jr. Memorial Roller Hockey Club has been a staple of Roller Hockey on Long Island for over 30 years. We take great pride in developing various programs that emphasize fun and enthusiasm, along with focusing on building a positive self-esteem. We encourage our instructional staff to commit themselves to teaching campers the importance of personal fitness and well being, as well as focusing on the camperŐs development of both basic and advanced hockey skills. Last but not least, we promote building friendships and developing quality personal traits.
Activities:
- Instructional Drills: From approximately 8am until 10am on Monday, the campers will be involved in instructional skating. Coach John Daley and his staff will work closely with all skaters to identify weaknesses and give them drills, and tips, to strengthen those weaknesses. This instruction is appropriate for players of all levels.
- Team Play Training: Hockey is a game which requires all players to learn to play as a team, and learning how to play as a team is an important part of a developing player. Daily instruction in the area of team play and strategy will help give each player a better understanding of their role on the ice. Players will learn breakout patterns, offensive position, and defensive and neutral zone position.
- Fun: We believe that non-hockey activities are a must for a fun camp experience. From approx. 10am until 11am there will be time for card games, nok-hockey, and other assorted field games, like soccer, football, wiffle ball, kick ball, and basketball. We also name a player of the day, everyday, who receives a trophy for having a great attitude!
- Food: Parents must provide lunch for their children (we will refrigerate all playersŐ lunches). Other refreshments will be available for purchase. Lunch will usually be set around 11am.
- Pool: Campers have the option to use the town pool under staff supervision. This is a great way for the kids to stay cool on hot summer days. The campers usually spend about 90 minutes in the pool from approx. 11:30am - 1pm.
- John J. Cup: We will select 2 teams from the crew in our Monday afternoon draft and begin our best of 7 week long series to see which team will be the champions of the week. All players will be given an opportunity to play and there are many opportunities to win trophies for ability AND sportsmanship.
- Daily Special Events: We have various special events during the week. "Shootout on the Gooch" where campers try to score on our counselor Brian "The Gooch" Gutswager. Wacky, Wet, and Wild Waterballoon Wednesday is always a big hit. The traditional Counselors vs. Kids game is usually on Thursdays. Pizza Fridays where kids can buy pizza. Weekly Nok Hockey tournaments for prizes.
